Welcome to the Heneka Lab!

Vision

Improved preventive, disease modifying, and acute therapy for patients suffering from neurodegenerative disease.

Mission

Clinical, translational and experimental studies to improve our understanding of patients needs, therapeutic interventions and disease pathogenesis.

Clinic and Research

Despite increasing research efforts our current therapeutic options for the treatment of all major neurodegenerative disorders are limited. Although, most of these diseases have been described a long time ago, no effective therapeutic interventions have been developed so far. Therefore, the major aim of our work is to improve the understanding of all factors that are involved in development of these diseases. The overarching goal is to translate new knowlegde into the clinic to prevent the  development of neurodegenerative diseases, to modify the disease course, and to provide effective therapeutics to patients who already suffer. Our scientific work focuses on the characterisation of innate immune mechanisms in Alzheimer`s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson`s disease and others. We hope to identify biomarkers for early disease detection and to uncover disease mechanisms which offer targets for theurapeutic intervention.
